Sonia Delaunay was a Jewish-French artist who, with her husband Robert Delaunay and others, co-founded the Orphism art movement, noted for its use of strong colors and geometric shapes. Her work extends to painting, textile design and stage set design. She was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964, and in 1975 was named an officer of the French Legion of Honor. Her work in modern design included the concepts of geometric abstraction, the integration of furniture, fabrics, wall coverings, and clothing.
Delaunay grew up in St. Petersburg. She studied drawing in Karlsruhe, Germany, and in 1905 moved to Paris, where she was influenced by the Post-Impressionists and the Fauvists. She married the artist Robert Delaunay in 1910, by which time she was painting in the style known as Orphism, which involved the harmonious juxtaposition of areas of pure colour. She extended Orphist principles to the design of fabrics, pottery decoration, stage sets, and other applied arts. Among her most important works were her Orphist illustrations for a poem by Blaise Cendrars entitled La Prose du Transsibérien et de la petite Jehanne de France (1913; “The Prose of the Trans-Siberian and of Little Jehanne of France”); the resulting volume was a landmark in modern book production.
During the 1920s Delaunay designed textiles and dresses, and her use of abstract colour harmonies had a strong influence on international fashion. She returned to painting in the 1930s, joining the Abstraction-Création association in 1931. She and Robert Delaunay became involved in public art projects, and they collaborated on vast murals for the Paris Exposition of 1937. After her husband’s death in 1941, Delaunay continued to work as a painter and designer, and she lived to see the mounting of retrospectives of her work by major museums from the 1950s onward. In 1964 she became the only woman to have had an exhibition at the Louvre Museum in her own lifetime.

Kees van Dongen, was a Dutch painter and one of the Fauves. He gained a reputation for his sensuous, at times garish, portraits. He was born in the suburbs of Rotterdam. In 1892 van Dongen started his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. Between 1892 to 1897, he frequented the Red Quarter seaport area, where he drew scenes of sailors and prostitutes. In 1899 he went to Paris. He began to exhibit in Paris, including the controversial 1905 exhibition Salon d'Automne, in a room featuring Matisse and others. The bright colors of this group of artists led to them being called Fauves ('Wild Beasts'). He was also briefly a member of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke (The Bridge). He was part of an avant-garde wave of painters—Maurice de Vlaminck, Othon Friesz, Henri Rousseau, Robert Delaunay, Albert Marquet, Edouard Vuillard—who incarnated hopes of a renewal in painting stuck in Neo-impressionism. In 1906 he moved to 13 rue Ravignan, where he was friends with the circle surrounding Pablo Picasso.
Under the influence of Jasmy Jacob, amongst others, Kees van Dongen developed the lush colors of his Fauvist style. This gained him a solid reputation with the French bourgeoisie. As a fashionable portraitist his subjects included Arletty, Leopold III of Belgium and Maurice Chevalier. With a playful cynicism he remarked of his popularity as a portraitist with high society women; ' The essential thing is to elongate the women and especially to make them slim. After that it just remains to enlarge their jewels. They are ravished.' A remark that allies itself to another of his sayings - ' Painting is the most beautiful of lies.' In 1926 he was awarded the Legion of Honour and in 1927 the Order of the Crown of Belgium. In 1929 he received French nationality and two of his works were admitted to the Musée du Luxembourg.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was founded in 1929 and is often recognized as the most influential museum of modern art in the world. MoMA also owns approximately 22,000 films and four million film stills, and MoMA's Library and Archives, the premier research facilities of their kind in the world, hold over 300,000 books, artist books, and periodicals, and extensive individual files on more than 70,000 artists.

Finally, another year has gone by, a year full of memories - memories that will grow inside me; like roots around my ribcage and sprouting flowers on my collarbones. I believe I could pick the flowers' petals everyday, but that won't prove me I'll forget everything - after all, the roots remains there, and they keep growing to remind me of what I've been through.

Some Trains Go Nowhere

On the way to Mt. Rainier is the tiny town of Elbe. Now I don't live in a big city, so when I call a town small, it's small.
They closed the railroad to Mt. Rainier years ago, and it left a bunch of train cars stranded near this town, so the town did the smart thing. Painted them vivid colors, and created restaurants and motels out of them.
Thank you ALL for all the recent attention regarding the photos from this week. It's been hard to take ANY photos at all as Seattle is always cloudy and rainy. I'm off this weekend so. I'm off to....
